Freight Receiving: How to Take Delivery of Your Kiln
Your kiln arrives by freight, not parcel. Here's exactly what to expect on delivery day — and the one step that protects you if it shows up damaged.
Your kiln won't arrive in a box on your porch — it ships strapped to a pallet on a freight truck. Knowing how that works ahead of time saves you a stressful delivery day and, more importantly, protects you if anything arrives damaged.
What "freight delivery" actually means
- It comes on a pallet by LTL freight, not parcel — kilns are far too heavy for UPS or FedEx ground.
- Liftgate, curbside. The truck lowers the pallet to the ground with a powered lift gate and leaves it at the curb or the end of your driveway. The driver is not required to bring it inside or into your studio — getting it from the curb to its spot is on you.
- By appointment. The carrier usually calls to schedule a delivery window, and someone needs to be there to inspect and sign.
Before delivery day
- Measure your doorways and the path to where the kiln will live — make sure it fits through.
- Clear that path and the destination spot.
- Line up help: a kiln can weigh 150–300+ pounds. Have an appliance dolly and at least one other person. Don't plan to move it alone.
The one step that matters most: inspect before you sign
Before you sign the delivery receipt, inspect the crate and pallet for damage — crushed corners, punctures, a leaning or shifted load. If you see anything, note it on the delivery receipt (write "damaged" and describe it) before signing, take photos, and contact us right away. Signing a clean receipt without inspecting can forfeit your ability to file a freight-damage claim.
This is your protection. Freight damage is rare, but when it happens, that noted-and-photographed receipt is what lets us make it right quickly.
After it's off the truck
- Move it carefully with your helper and dolly, along the path you cleared.
- Unpack and check parts against the manual — kiln, lid, stand, and any included furniture or controller.
- Keep the packaging until you've confirmed everything's intact and working. You'll need it for any return or claim.
- Found concealed damage after unpacking? Photograph it and contact us within 48 hours.
